Community Description

Connaught (Beltline) is an urban, high density district with a mix of residential, office, retail and public buildings in close proximity. Nearly all residential buildings in the Beltline are multi-unit. All of these things, taken together, give the Beltline an authentic urban character.

Heritage in the Beltline

The Beltline has eleven decades of history and buildings from every one of them are still here.  In fact, most of Calgary’s heritage sites are in the Beltline.

Heritage adds value. In 2006, Beltline Communities undertook comprehensive heritage research and compiled detailed information of every historic property in the district. Known as the Beltline Heritage Inventory Project (BHIP), this created a platform for new heritage interpretation and “adaptive reuse” of old buildings.

17 Avenue

Connaught is also home to 17th Avenue, which is on the southern extremity of the Beltline district has already established itself as a vibrant mixed-use area. With a dense concentration of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and shops, the street is effectively Calgary’s primary “party street”. Behind this lively commercial development are residential areas. The street also “dead-ends” at the Stampede Grounds on its east side, and is thus central to the party-like atmosphere that overtakes the city during the Calgary Stampede festival. 17th Avenue was nicknamed the “Red Mile” in 2004 during the playoff run of Calgary’s NHL team, the Calgary Flames. During this time, it was not uncommon to see over 100,000 fans crowding the street and its bars and pubs on game nights.
